Happy New Year!
WELCOME to a brand new year AND…a brand new post from Canvas Counseling and Wellness! It is often so typical for everyone to come into the new year with refreshed vigor and motivation because we feel like the slate is somewhat wiped clean and we can start over anew. YES, there are aspects of that that are true, AND let us also remind ourselves that we can keep starting afresh with every new minute, hour, day, week, month, and so on and so forth.
Here at Canvas Counseling and Wellness we strive to keep the motivational ball rolling through our professional development and commitment striving to translate that motivation to our clients. One of the biggest keys to accomplishing our goals is to keep ourselves motivated regardless of the time of year. Tuning our language and our thinking towards the positive is a great way to start building more motivation.
For instance, in sessions, our clients may hear us say “YES, AND…” on a consistent basis. Interestingly, this type of positive/continuous language is used often in therapy, specifically Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), AND in other areas of human interaction.
One great example is Improv Comedy/Acting. The “YES, AND…”, method allows for continuous building on what someone else says. Too often we dismiss and/or minimize our feelings and experience with “BUT.” For example, “I was disappointed BUT I’m ok.” YES, that may be true, AND so is “I was disappointed AND I’m ok.” Read that again but pause to notice what the difference in these sentences reveals. The ‘AND’ changes the disappointment from the feeling of negativity and invalidation to a more positive and validated feeling. You are honoring both feelings and thereby yourself.
